Discreet Pocket-Sized Fun: Travalo review

Fragrance addicts are just like any other type of addict: they can’t get enough of their chosen drug. Granted, this particular addiction is significantly less harmful to one’s health than some others, but living with the addiction is regardless a heavy burden. One must always have a bottle of perfume nearby, or they will experience severe withdrawal symptoms. But full bottles are heavy and impractical to carry (think air travel restrictions), not least because they are endlessly fragile and expensive to replace. One wrong move and BAM – disaster. How to cope?

As one of the self-admitted addicts mentioned, I’ve found the solution to this issue is to invest in large bottles of fragrance and use them as wells to refill portable atomizers, which can be found in various forms and at different price points. You can buy dollar-store travel kits and pour the perfume in (messy), or even try the generic brand drugstore variety which comes with a not-so-handy nor easy to use funnel. But nothing beats the acclaimed Travalo, and in this case buying brand name is truly worth the extra money. Before this review sample came I’d already purchased 3 for myself – that’s a testimony for how great they are. I use them every day, and that’s the truth.

Travalo is a line of refillable, aircraft-approved aluminum perfume atomizers that retails in Canada at Shoppers Drug Mart and newly at Sephora. Besides the fun patterns and colors, what makes them so ingenious is the patented Genie-S system, which allows them to draw fragrance directly into the reservoir using a self-contained pump that sits on top of your favorite perfumes. Simply remove the perfume’s atomizer cap, position Travalo on top, and pump until you reach the desired volume (viewable through the clear plastic window). No spills, no extra tools, and it takes seconds to top up to full 5 ml capacity. They even have a rollerball option if you prefer.

These handy little guys are great for gym bags, keeping at the office, and ideal for touch-ups and sleepover kits. They’re small and discreet, but available in cute designs if you do want to show off. Pictured is the Excel model in pink ($19.99*), and if you decide to pick up one for yourself or a gift Travalo will donate 25% of the sale to the Bright Pink organization for the prevention of breast and ovarian cancer until the end of the month. So what are you waiting for? Make sure you never leave home without your favorite fragrance again, in style. Thank you to Lynley for organizing this review.
