Night of the Living Makeup: Zombie Inspired Beauty from BH Cosmetics & Demeter Fragrance Library

Editor’s note: the Demeter Fragrance Library products mentioned below were brought out April 2016, discontinued, and will be returning for Halloween 2016.

I once spent a good twenty minutes talking to a friend about how we would survive a zombie attack if we were stuck inside a Sephora store, and I think we really figured it out. We talked about gluing the doors shut with eyelash adhesive, using hairspray as flamethrowers, smashing the mirrors for weapons, and making our last stand at the Beauty Studio. All in all, I think we’d survive at least the first wave, and we’d definitely look sickening doing it.

There’s a good group of beauty junkies out there with an equal passion for the undead, as evident by the presence of so many zombie-themed beauty products on the Internet. There are zombie eye shadow palettes, zombie liquid lipsticks, and even zombie perfume; how’s a dead girl or boy to choose?!

Today I’m going to talk about my recently purchased Pride + Prejudice + Zombies Eye and Cheek Palette from BH Cosmetics, which at $16.50* is a really affordable way to, er, feed your addiction (braaaaaiiiinnnnsssss). I’ve bought the BH Cosmetics Galaxy Chic Baked Eyeshadow Palette before ($20*), and for the price it has certainly served me well. It has really fun bright shades of blue, purple and orange and makes for lots of interesting looks. This palette is different because the pigments are pressed, not baked, and the color selection is definitely more subdued. You get a nice blend of mattes, shimmers and downright metallic shades, as well as two blushes and a highlight.

The cardboard packaging is a little cheap and flimsy when compared to something like the Urban Decay Naked series, but then again it is cheaper than those products. I like that everything is spaced apart so that the colors don’t mix, and that the color families are grouped together in their respective rows. When I swatched them on my hand I could not BELIEVE the pigmentation, even for the lighter matte shades. Everything is beautiful, even though the metallic shades are a little chunky. On the eyes the light matte shades had a little bit of a challenge showing on my medium complexion, but then again I wasn’t using a primer. The orange-brown matte shade, however, made the perfect transition/crease color, and the black was ideal in the outer corner. I had trouble packing on the gold metallic shade all over the lid and getting it even, but the purple right underneath it was really pretty on my bottom lash line for an added burst of color. The blushes were a tad tough to break into and quite similar on the skin, but the highlight made for a really nice “wet” look. Overall I had a lot of fun creating a “regular” look with this palette (even though it faded too fast for my taste), but the real fun was using it to create a glamorous zombie look, appropriate for any prom…

Of course you wouldn’t want to take a zombie for a date without something to cover up the stench of rotting flesh, so Demeter Fragrance Library kindly hooked me up with their classic Zombie for Her and Zombie for Him scents, along with the recently announced Zombie Dog. Yep, you read that right. Zombie Dog. This zombie family smells like mushrooms, green leaves, moss and peat, or the accumulation of partially decayed vegetation or organic matter. Yum! For Her also features a red wine aroma, which I’m told pairs exceptionally well with the taste of cerebrospinal fluid (it actually sweetens up the composition a great deal). Dog, on the other hand, pairs this distinct fragrance profile with Fido’s favorite treat: bacon! The unmistakable salty, meaty smell of pork will make you smell irresistible to dead man’s best friend. Truthfully the Zombie family is pretty horrendous by typical beauty standards, but hyper realistic and highly imaginative. It fits right in with scents like Xyrena’s Dark Ride, and for $20 or less a bottle it’s not too bad to have some fun.

Tell me, would you wear zombie inspired makeup or perfume? And I’m not talking about Halloween only!
