Homme Improvement: Male Skincare Makeover ft. Lab Series

     Everyone, meet Joe.

Joe is a fairly normal guy. He’s 24, healthy and active, just graduated, pretty goofy, and thinks about his skin the way most young men do. That’s to say, he doesn’t think about his skin much at all. Sure, he’s aware his skin could be improved, but he doesn’t know how. And frankly, foraging into the department store for help is a little too much for him. No, thank you. He used to use body wash to clean his face (gasp) but has since upgraded to a solid cleanser from First Aid Beauty that was only kinda getting the job done.

I teamed up with Lab Series, a division of Estée Lauder, to show Joe (and all my male readers) that taking care of your skin doesn’t have to be complicated, difficult, or expensive. And it’s DEFINITELY not just for the ladies. In fact, Lab Series makes high tech, high performance skincare for men only. In Canada you can find them in Shoppers Drug Mart, Holt Renfrew, The Bay, and even Sephora. Their products range from $20 to $83.

The products that Lab Series hooked Joe up with are designed to be used in a simple 3 step routine. The first step is to Clean your face, which is done by the Invigorating Face Scrub ($33*). This gel scrub removes the top layer of dead skin to reduce flakiness and dullness and reveal younger, smoother skin. It also does double duty by thoroughly cleansing your pores from dirt and oil. We challenged Joe to use the scrub 2 times a week, and this is what he came back with after a month and a half of testing (my notes are in bold).

The Invigorating Face Scrub was really nice, I enjoyed using it. My skin got a little red after scrubbing but that’s probably because it was more sensitive afterwards (that would be the invigorating part!). My face has never been softer than after using this face scrub, so the only thing I would change is maybe adding a bit of colour to the mix. Just because I would put it all over my face but it was clear so I wasn’t sure what areas were covered or not. Just a small suggestion.

Good point, Joe. Colour in skincare products is generally frowned upon because it can stain, but then again the best-selling ExfoliKate is a forest green colour. Maybe we’ll see a coloured Invigorating Face Scrub in the future!

For his Treat step, Joe applied a light layer of the Future Rescue Repair Serum ($60*) every morning and evening. This multitasking product detoxifies skin, defends it from environmental aggressors, and rebuilds it to reverse damage. What more could you ask for? Again, let’s see what Joe has to say.

The Future Rescue Repair Serum was my favourite part. It was always very refreshing putting it on after showering. It sinks into the skin super quickly, which is nice because I didn’t have to wait at all before I put on the moisturizer (spoiler alert!). It also smelled very nice, like I was on vacation or something.

Vacation? Take me with you! It’s no surprise that Joe liked the serum so much. The serum is the most overlooked component in a regular skincare regime. Without treating the skin with a proper serum you simply won’t see the improvements you desire. For women, I highly recommend the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum, which you can read about here.

When it came to the final task of Hydrate, we decided to challenge Joe even more. In the morning he would use the Daily Moisture Defence Lotion with SPF 15 ($54*), and in the evening he used the Age Rescue Face Lotion ($48*). You might call all these anti-aging products overkill for such a young fella, but the industry as a whole is really moving towards preventative anti-aging, so the younger you start using these specialized products the better.

The Daily Moisture Defence Lotion with SPF 15 was probably the most practical of the two, in my opinion. The added SPF was a very nice touch to prevent the sun damage our skin gets on the daily. I feel like in the long run it would definitely help with wrinkles (you’re right!). The consistency was kind of like sunscreen, so it took a bit longer for it to absorb into the skin (but nothing too crazy).

The Age Rescue Face Lotion was also nice. It compliments the Future Rescue Repair Serum very well, and without it my face felt way too dry. When my face started to get dry I applied the lotion and it was like instant relief. I can’t go back at this point! The moisturized feeling is so much more relaxing and refreshing.

Attaboy, Joe! What were his final thoughts on the Lab Series products he’d gotten so attached to?

Overall, I think the products work fantastically together. It was always a very refreshing experience to wash and hydrate my face. There’s a noticeable difference after using these for sure. My face was always dry and irritated but this helped with my sensitive skin situation. I will definitely keep buying these products, because honestly using a bar of soap on my face just gives me chills now.

Well said, my friend. Well said. There’s a whole range of Lab Series products we didn’t get to try out this time around (he refuses to shave), so definitely check them out next time you’re at the mall. Men’s skincare not only makes a perfect gift (especially with Father’s Day coming up), it’s also an investment in your future. Big thank you to Solmaz for all of her help and generosity in organizing this feature, and if you want to see more of Joe you can follow him on Instagram (and maybe he’ll be back on Nosegasm.com in the future!).
