Gentle reminder that Mother’s Day is THIS WEEKEND! If you still haven’t found the perfect gift, make sure to head to FragranceNet.com (banner links). My top pick for literally any mother (I dare you to find a woman who wouldn’t like it) is Christian Dior’s J’Adore L’Absolu ($86.24*). Introduced in 2012 as a limited-edition, highly concentrated version of J’Adore ($89.99*), this juice contains prominent notes of jasmine, tuberose, and rose. It smells creamy, fresh, clean, sophisticated, romantic, womanly, and celebratory. The best part is, it lasts all day long. The bottle is shaped like a woman’s curves, inspired by the designer’s lucky number eight. It’s the perfect gift, especially paired with a Dior lipstick and moisturizer. It can be worn during the day in comfortable clothes, or with heels and a chic dress for dinner.
Inspired by J’Adore L’Absolu‘s motherly nature, here is a preview of the card I put together for my own mom (her name is Daniela). I hope you are inspired afterwards to give your mom a fierce hug, or at least an overdue call.
Dear Mom: although I will try today once again to arrange the 26 English letters into a fitting tribute, I know that my words will never be quite sufficient to tell you how I feel about you. I may write for international magazines and win poetry championships at least once a year, but my tongue will inevitably fail in this mission and my fingers will not tap the right keys. Such is the nature of life, that we can never describe the most important things.
From the start I was a little trouble maker for you, and you my fearless protector and teacher. I popped out into the world upside-down, staring at everything from a mildly offensive viewpoint. I had a tendency to hurt myself and everyone around me with experiments relating to gravity (“Catch me!”), and a strange fear of Disney movies and the dark that must have kept you awake longer than truly necessary.
As I entered my teen years you stood back to allow me to fly on my own, knowing that I will fall and crash and burn but trusting me to get back up. You listened when I was unjustifiably mad, you taught me the secrets of kindness and love, and you patiently put your passions aside so that I could focus on mine. You cried only when I wasn’t looking, never spoke of your troubles when I was listening, and allowed me to grow unrestrained in whichever direction I desired.
So thank you, Mom. Thank you for always packing me a healthy lunch with tasty treats, and leaving the light on when you know I’ll come home late. Thank you for letting me drive even though it scares you. Thank you for giving up your gift cards so that I could have a new book or pair of shoes. Thank you for lending your wrist to a million perfumes so that I could ramble on about them. Thank you for insisting I come home for Shabbat dinner every week, and for wiping my tears when my heart is broken.
All this and still I cannot express my gratitude and appreciation. Your selflessness and generosity in everything you do for everyone you meet is the reason that love is so strong in your life. Though your body may fail you sometimes, know that I am now strong enough to lift you back on your feet. You will never be forgotten, left behind, left alone after all you have done. Our relation is not perfect, but it’s damn close. I love you so much, and on this Mother’s Day I hope you get to relax and enjoy the fruits of your labor (or my burnt French toast).
