So Good You Could Eat It: Demeter Fragrance Library Pizza, Vanilla Cake Batter & more review

Do you consider yourself to be a serious “foodie?” Are you constantly on your phone looking up the newest bars, cafés, and restaurants to check out? And when you meet friends for dinner, do you spend more time discussing the flavor of the vinaigrette than talking to the people who you’re with? If so, I want you to meet Demeter Fragrance Library’s amazing food-inspired lineup, but only when you’re done snapping photos of your plate for Instagram. It’s okay, I’ll wait.

In the past months we covered some of the holiday and high concept fragrances from Demeter, but this range is where they truly shine. The smell of food has an instant effect on the mind and body, transporting us to dining rooms around the world instantaneously while making the salivary glands work overtime. Think of the smell of baking bread, or chocolate – instantly makes your tummy rumble, doesn’t it? If you could capture the smell… well, wouldn’t you?

Blueberry, presented in a standard Demeter apothecary bottle with a dark blue stripe, is one of my favorites. Blueberries, for those unfamiliar, are indigo-hued berries from a type of shrub, about 1 cm in diameter. They are grown in and are very popular in North America, where they are eaten raw as a tart snack with a meaty inside or used in preparing pancake batters, fruit pies, healthy smoothies, and various other recipes. Rich in antioxidants, they’re also popular in cosmetics (Ole Henriksen’s Blue/Black Berry Enzyme Mask, $36*, comes to mind). The Blueberry pick-me-up cologne is a perfect balance of their sweet and sour fruitiness and baked goods, and makes me crave a good blueberry muffin with crunchy oats sprinkled on top. It’s also one of their longest-lasting scents, and like the rest is fairly linear in its development. This would make an excellent house-warming gift as an atmosphere diffuser oil ($25*).

If you’re looking for something fruitier that came right out of the orchard, give Golden Delicious and Pomegranate a try. GD smells like fresh applesauce with a hint of soapiness, just super pleasant and yummy and quite reminiscent of its inspiration. Pomegranate has a unique dark amber color and smells a tad medicine-y, like children’s gummies or crumbly pills. You can sweeten up the deal with Honey, which smells straight-up like the sweet and caramelized ambrosia. A little floral, and a very “happy” scent. Pairs exceptionally well with Golden Delicious!

The last two I want to talk about today are everything a dedicated “foodie” could ever ask for. If you’re stuck on what to get your baking-obsessed friend for her birthday, look no further than Vanilla Cake Batter, a phenomenal representation of a yellow cupcake with cream cheese frosting piled in big, fluffy clouds on top. Fans of Britney Spears’ Fantasy will find the familiar accord irresistible, and with bottles starting at just $6 for 15 ml* it’s the perfect addition to a gift. Better yet, buy a big bottle and make it a tradition in your house that the birthday girl/boy gets to smell like a sweet treat all day long. And of course, this wouldn’t be a Demeter feature without something completely unexpected (remember Cannabis Flower?). Make sure to clear the room, because I’m about to blow your mind. Are you ready? Two words: pizza perfume. Pizza is everything I ever wanted, and so much more: crispy and airy crust, still steaming from the oven. Salty mozzarella cheese bubbling from within, which drags and pulls with every bite; and a generous helping of flavorful tomato sauce mixed with oregano and garlic – it’s every teenager’s dream. Pick up a bottle for yourself and your bestie, and you won’t regret it. It’s simply unbelievably good, and is sure to turn heads.

Verdict: If this review has you reaching for the fridge door or picking up the phone to order in, then just wait until you smell these guys. If perfume has the power to change our memories, and food has the power to bring us together, then just imagine how unstoppable they are together. You can find the Demeter collection in its entirety online or, rather appropriately, in select supermarkets. Bon appétit!

  1. I’m definitely interested in the blueberry scent…and pizza, out of sheer curiosity! I tried their tomato scent and it really did smell like tomatoes on the vine…which is a lovely reminder of the summer to come when it’s snowing out (but maybe not to wear to, say, a wedding)!

    • Hi Jacqueline, I haven’t tried tomato yet but I will! Pizza is definitely not a wedding day fragrance, no xD Unless you’re having a very Italian wedding!
