We are officially at that point in the year when the weather is too cold for comfort, the scenery is bleak and blank, and spring is on everyone’s mind. If you’ve had enough of this dang winter to last you a lifetime, you need yourself some summer in a bottle, and I know just the thing. Maybe this will give you a hint…
Seasonal fragrances are the result of an industry with too many releases annually, struggling to find each of them a home. If everyone only bought one bottle a year (imagine!) then the department stores wouldn’t be doing so well at all, so it is necessary to impose the idea of a seasonal fragrance wardrobe as much as possible. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for it – the more, the merrier I always think. Why stick to just one when you can have one for every day of the week, January through December? But between the endless releases and specialized summer flankers, what to smell first?
Dasein Fragrance helps make things easier with their “seasons” collection, a quartet of ultra-special unisex perfumes that correlate directly to WINTER, SPRING, SUMMER and AUTUMN (reviews linked, $95 each*). Perfumer Samantha has been featured on Vogue, InStyle, and New York Magazine to name a few, and in our interview last year I was impressed by how down-to-earth she is, and how much care she put into each of her creations. For example, when a particular ingredient of SPRING went extinct, she reevaluated and ended up with a beautiful vetiver, violet, sandalwood, rose, yuzu and black pepper masculine that I described as a “dreamy lumberjack friend hanging in flannel around the Christmas tree.” If that doesn’t interest you, you and I have nothing to talk about! She was kind enough to send over a couple of samples for me to try, and I was eager to get started.
SUMMER, released in time for (you guessed it!) summertime last year, has that impeccable “simplicity” factor of previous releases from the house. Both WINTER and SPRING were very manly scents with fairly simple profiles, but SUMMER is more unisex with notes of fresh aromatic cilantro, dark grass (a very peculiar ‘distilled’ note), and juicy grapefruit (you can practically hear the whisper of the fruit’s succulent flesh ripping as you cut into it). It smells like a sort of cocktail or cool dessert with a cool evening breeze, but since the citrus is rather subdued it doesn’t fizzle out as quickly as most top notes and doesn’t read very sweet. It’s a captivating, clear scent that more than anything says fading sunshine and good times.
Verdict: Samantha does it again with her third release, and I can confidently say I’d never seen a brighter orange juice that this (has anyone?!). You could very well wear only a collection of her perfumes for the entire year, and never smell out of season. SUMMER and its three siblings are each hand blended in small batches in Los Angeles, and are available now at select retailers across the States, Canada, Australia, and at the links below. Here’s to the groundhog not seeing its shadow!
