One of my biggest fears when travelling by airplane is being served reindeer sandwiches at 1 AM. Seriously, it happened once in Finland and I haven’t been the same since.

But other than my irrational phobia of roasted herbivores, I’m always worried about my toiletries. Most airlines advise travelers to carry all their cosmetics in a clear plastic bag for quick examination, but in my case that’s simply not realistic. Between my five-step morning and 15-step night skincare routines, a makeup collection worthy of four shelving units, 90+ bottles of fine fragrance and a trusty heap of masks for in-flight relaxation, I simply can’t travel light – so sorry, officer! Therefore the chance always exists that something will be confiscated, and the only way to minimize the risk is to keep my precious fragrances at home.

Recently I discovered a whole branch of perfume by-products that solves this problem in style: solid perfumes. From Elizabeth & James to LUSH, so many brands are getting in on the trend because of the portability and usability of such items. As you’ll see below, they also double as jewelry in some cases! This is my current selection of solid perfumes, courtesy of They’re the Internet’s leading provider of fragrances, hair care, skincare, candles and makeup for up to 75% off department store prices, and they’ve always got some coupons going on. Check them out on Twitter as well for their monthly Win What You Want party – link below.

If you’re looking for a low-budget alternative to Comptoir Sud Pacifique’s popular Vanille Extreme, you’re in for a treat; the edible vanilla note of the former is mimicked similarly in Britney Spears’ classic Fantasy from 2005. Featuring a cupcake accord (with frosting!), white chocolate, kiwi and litchi, this is one sweet-smelling dream that young fans have adored for years. Now it comes in a discreet (if you can call it that) compact with .15 oz of solid perfume, inspired by the crystal-studded signature bottle. To experience this intense dose of sugary goodness and a cockpit fantasy of your own, find the Britney Spears Fantasy solid on for $13.99 or less*.

For the truly sophisticated, this little travel companion will turn every head in the duty-free. From Paco Rabanne, this is Lady Million solid perfume, with .07 oz that comes in a sturdy and stunning gold nugget. It took four master perfumers with tons of best-sellers between them to perfect the honey, raspberry, and jasmine formula. The effect is sweet, sensual and oh-so-foxy. 1. Solid perfumes are a great alternative – especially when traveling. They are packed with concentrated fragrance and easy to apply. Aside from use as body perfumes, they are also great car or wardrobe fresheners.

Most famous are the Solid Musk Cubes from Abdul Samad Al Qurashi (ASAQ) – legendary for their exquisite white musk fragrance – these are huge in the Middle East and rapidly gaining popularity around the world. Available from us Zahras Perfumes – a pack of 6 highly concentrated musk cubes costs only US$38.
