The popularity of subscription boxes in recent years has really been startling, as is their equally wide variety. Everyone’s got a box for something, including the Olfactif and Scent Trunk boxes for niche perfumes (not that I’m complaining!). Only box I’m still waiting for is one that delivers cash…
Birchbox is arguably one of the better known of such boxes, founded by Katia Beauchamp and Hayley Barna in 2010 and reaching $7 million in revenue in 2011. Fast forward to now, the company is valued at $485 million1 – not too shabby for a pair of recent graduates. With the kind of following that garners sales of that volume it is no surprise that Birchbox scored themselves an exclusive product range or two, including this Catherine Malandrino Style de Paris perfume. The best part? As far as I’m concerned, this is the first in-depth review of the fragrance in the blogosphere. You’re welcome, World! The subscription box sends out samples of this fragrance to beauty addicts the world over, who gave it an average of 4/5 stars based on 10,570 ratings.
Catherine Malandrino is a Paris-born, New York-based designer that worked for Diane von Furstenberg before launching her private line for which she is the namesake. Her style is “sexy dresses, daring colors, and slinky jersey gowns”. Of her French origins, she says: “I can bring Paris to an American woman. Everybody wants to be a part of the dream2.” Amen, sister! Some of her famous clients include Madonna, Halle Berry, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristen Stewart, Demi Moore, and Alicia Moore3.
The perfume collection currently consists of 3 sizes of the EDP, shower gel, body lotion, and a gift set. On the Catherine Malandrino website you’ll also find travel sprays and body crème, all of which make for perfect layering options and splendid gifts, since the perfume is on the expensive side. Not to mention that because of its limited distribution it’s a unique fragrance, for sure – practically nobody else will smell like you, and you’ll sound very elegant when speaking the name (even if you mispronounce it for the first three months, as I did).
The packaging for the 100ml bottle I received for review consideration is a sturdy cardboard with an outer sleeve. As you can see in the video above, the colors really represent Malandrino’s designing aesthetics. The bottle is heavy glass with a highly fingerprint-retentive metallic cap. It is simplistic with a bold presence.
This 2014 juice is heavily fruity, with juicy pear and tangy grapefruit in the opening. It kind of smells like those canned fruit compotes, the ones with soft fruit pieces soaked in syrup. I smell sensual but soft jasmine in the heart, and a base of comfortable patchouli in the base. Style de Paris is an extremely pleasant, remarkably easy to wear everyday women’s fragrance – the perfect equivalent to Catherine’s style in fashion. I can see why it is an office favorite at 3B International, the manufacturer of the fragrance. It has elegance and is addictively feminine but in a grownup way. Longevity is also quite good, with a hint of vanilla in the dry down.
Verdict: Birchbox was right to snap this one up, because it’s too good to pass over. Catherine Malandrino’s Style de Paris is a classic modern scent (paradox alert!) that will live comfortably in every women’s fragrance wardrobe as the first bottle she reaches for as she heads out the door. It is perhaps too casual for date night or going out on the town, but paired with a sunny morning, blue jeans, and a pinch of joyfulness it is just perfect.
