There are coffee lovers, and there are coffee addicts. Those in the latter category will adore this body scrub from Vancouver-based Jealous Body Scrub, makers of the Coffee + Coconut Scrub.

In the past I’ve used scrubs made with sugar or salt, but a coffee-based exfoliant never crossed my mind, though it makes perfect sense; not only does coffee have a delicious natural aroma, its fine granules are also perfect for stripping dead skin.

The company currently sells just this one product, which lets you know that plenty of thought and effort has gone into making it the best it can be. I do know that they’re currently in the development stages for new products, which I’m excited to hear about in the future. To keep up with news about releases, check out the link to their Twitter page at the end of this review.

So what makes their Coffee + Coconut Scrub so special? It is made of all-natural robusta coffee1, the same kind that is used in your espresso2. It also has organic cold pressed coconut oil, raw brown sugar, sea salt, vitamin E and minerals1. When I look at the ingredients list on the back of the package I can see that this is really all that is inside, and the fact that there are no unidentified chemicals in the mix makes me feel good about putting it on my skin.

These simple ingredients are meant to help the scrub reduce the appearance of skin’s imperfections such as acne, cellulite, and stretch marks. In my opinion to see visible results you would need to use this for at least four weeks in order for your skin to cycle through and show improvement3.

Luckily, each $17.95 bag has 200 grams of the scrub, meaning you can enjoy its benefits for a long time. It’s not the cheapest scrub on the market, but when compared to equally natural and ethical products such as LUSH Cosmetics’ Ocean Salt ($21.95/120g4) it is a great value, especially combined with the complimentary US and Canada shipping.

The thing I loved the most about the packaging for the scrub was the hilarious instructions card that came in the package. Some of the best lines include: “We are finally together!” “I need you to take off your clothes, cause I’m taking you to the shower.” “Don’t worry if we get too messy, that’s how I like it.” And my personal favourite is from the package’s label: “Want to make others jealous? Post pictures of us together.”

My only regret for the packaging is that it is a waxy paper on the outside, and although the product is protected on the inside by a zipped plastic pouch I feel uncomfortable bringing what looks like a paper bag into the shower where it will get wet.

The star ingredient in this scrub is the coffee, and man, it doesn’t disappoint! Unlike ‘wet’ scrubs that have lots of oil to stick grains to each other, Coffee + Coconut’s pieces are loose and do not become dense on the skin, making what is a medium to harsh exfoliation completely tolerable. After washing the product off you are left with conditioned and softened skin thanks to the coconut oil, and a refreshing coffee scent that lingers afterwards.

As for the aroma, when mixed with hot water the natural scent of coffee becomes a (you guessed it!) brewed coffee scent with hints of chocolate. Remember, there is no added perfume in this scrub, so those allergic to artificial scent will appreciate the all-natural gourmand fragrance.

Verdict: This simple, effective scrub is a no-brainer for those who love coffee and have a bit of a budget. It sits at a unique price point that makes it a desirable yet affordable gift, perfect for a child’s teachers. I am very happy with the performance of this Coffee + Coconut Scrub from Jealous Body Scrub, and look forward to seeing what else they come up with. In the meantime, I’ll be showering – and having my morning brew at the same time, too!
