Obsession (noun): an idea or thought that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person’s mind.
Would I say I have an obsession with citrus scents? A little bit. I can’t help it, I love them. Whenever I try a new line of fragrances, I always ask the SA for the most citrus-y one (case in point: Lush Sexy Peel).
Citrus scents bring me joy, and there are so many words I associate with them: fresh, sweet, clean, rejuvenating, uplifting, energizing… shall we consult the thesaurus for more, or do I make my point?
Citrus-y wax is a little trickier than fine fragrance, because it sometimes comes with the inevitable, plastic-y wax scent. Citrus notes also don’t tend to be terribly long-lasting, which is a quality I look for when it comes to wax. Bath & Body Works hit the nail right on the head with Limoncello, since renamed Cheers to Capri. I still have a mini of that scent, tucked in my wax drawer, never to be burned, just admired.
Because I’ve already found my ideal citrus wax blend, I’m certainly skeptical when it comes to challengers. But I have to admit, Citrus Tango by Yankee Candle seems like a formidable opponent in the smelly arena.
Packing a serious punch and too many fighting analogies, this week’s review is for Yankee Candle’s 1.75 oz votive in Citrus Tango, which retails for $1.99.
Citrus Tango‘s wax is a pastel yellow colour that brings Easter chicks to mind, and is cylindrical in shape with a wider top. The wick was a bit off centre and notably short. The label on the front reads YANKEE CANDLE / CITRUS TANGO / with pure, natural plant extracts, on a background of a whole bunch of citrus fruits. The whole candle is shrink-wrapped, with a sticker on the bottom carrying the bar code, safety information, and more. For some reason the appearance of this votive screams Peeps® to me, but I digress. In addition, I’ve never encountered a sweatier votive from YC than this one – it felt slippery and oily.
The Yankee Candle website description reads:
Time to shake things up with this lively, playful melody of sunny orange, lemon zest, and grapefruit.
Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow! Citrus Tango is a bitter grapefruit (side note: why is it called that anyway??), sweet orange, and boozy lemon. No one fruit from this takes the trophy home for beating the others, but they work together extremely well. One of them leads into the next in a cycle that tumbles in your nasal canal, wooing you with dreams of lively summer nights. Together it comes off as a slightly bitter lemonade, like those made from scratch with a bit of pulp in the cup. It smells like bitter orange rinds and everything lovely about summer.
My verdict: Limoncello and Citrus Tango are different beasts entirely, each wonderful in their own way. CT is more complicated, a more mature citrus, that is so fun. This is one of my favourite Yankee Candle scents, and I highly suggest you run out and smell it.
