If there’s one thing that a broke student fragrance blogger loves more than mac and cheese, it’s free stuff (or free mac and cheese!).

As you know, I don’t mind whipping out the plastics and paying for something I want, but sometimes it’s nice to get without giving; give me free samples, gifts-with-purchases, or toss a freebie in with my order and I am good to go!

If you’re like me, when you’re being asked at the cash register if you have a rewards card, your answer is always yes. You have a seperate wallet for your cards, plus an app on your phone to store the ones that won’t fit. You know all the spending levels, and you give your family, friends, and complete strangers your card for their purchases as well. Sounds familiar? Unfrotunately, many of these programs just don’t work in the consumer’s favour – you have to spend a ridiculous amount to get anything back.

Sephora’s Beauty Insider is one of those reward programs you actually want to be part of, especially if you’re a makeup junkie or obsessive fumehead. It’s so simple: spend a dollar, earn a point. Reach 100 points, get a gift. $100 for a freebie might sound like a lot, but heaven knows $100 doesn’t go all that far in Sephora anyway – two or three purchases and you have the first tier prize in your bag.

But you see, that’s not the only thing Beauty Insider’s good for – you also get a little something for your birthday, even without making a purchase. Most girlies get a deluxe mini of Make Up For Ever’s Rouge Artist Natural Lipstick and Smoky Extravagant Mascara, but us manly men (*cough*) get a tube of Performance Remedy Turbo Wash by Jack Black. I was casually purchasing an Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Liner (um, for a friend?) when the SA pleasantly announced my birthday gift will be placed in my bag.

Free stuff? Don’t mind if I do!

Who is Jack Black, you might wonder. Well, as their Our Company page states, they are not affiliated with the actor, which is terribly unfortunate IMHO. They were founded in the year 2000 to cater specifically for men. You’re welcome.

This is my review for Jack Black’s 3 fl oz Performance Remedy Turbo Wash, which retails for $25 at Sephora (for the 10 oz).

Jack Black Performance Remedy Turbo Wash

The packaging for the Performance Remedy Turbo Wash is a royal blue tube with a black cap. The front of the tube has a label, and the directions, ingredients, and other information are printed on the back. I think this packaging really gets the job done in terms of appealing to men – good work, JB. Something to note: this formula is both vegan and sulfates free.

The scent for Performance Remedy Turbo Wash is extremely refreshing, consisting primarily and mostly of eucalyptus, with a hint of rosemary. My association with this scent is that of eucalyptus drops my mother used to sprinkle on my pillow when I had a stuffy nose as a kid – good times. What I find surprising and slightly disappointing is that there is no Jack Black face wash with this scent – just for the body or hair. Hu. If you love the scent of eucalyptus, you’ll love this.

Let me tell you how pleasantly surprised I was to find that Performance Remedy Turbo Wash has a good lather, following weeks of using the dreadful fruit scented washes I reviewed a little while back. The soap itself is a milky silver, which is not my favourite thing, but I can deal. It doesn’t last out of the shower, but with all the scented lotions and mists I use it doesn’t matter anyway. I tried it on my hair once, didn’t like it, end of that story.

Verdict: for a freebie, I was all too happy to use this. I really enjoyed this scent and the formula, but I don’t think the price tag is realistic, when there are so many other great options available for less. As a ‘luxury’ product, sure. But for the day-to-day, I’ll stick to drugstore Old Spice. This also opened my eyes to Jack Black, and now I may be more comfortable opening a sample of their ‘beard lube’ I received with a purchase, although I’ll still not quite sure what to expect. Stay tuned.. 😉
